Nature Conservation & Environmental Surveys PDF Print E-mail

MARENCO undertakes flora and fauna surveys as part of the process for planning applications in relation to development and in respect of specific works (e.g. tree and hedge maintenance).  The survey establishes baseline data on habitats present within the area of the proposed development and within approximately 100 m of the site boundary.   Surveys are undertaken during the preferred time of late April to early October.

Habitat characteristics are assessed by a walkover survey listing species and noting an ecological description of plant assemblages.  Mammals are indentified either by direct sighting or through identification of other evidence such as tracks or droppings.  Visual sightings and auditory identification of songs and calls assessed the presence of birds occupying the survey area.  Habitats are classified according to standard Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) methodology for Habitat Survey (JNCC, 1993).  A habitat map and plant species list are prepared.

A search for protected flora and fauna under the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 is undertaken as part of this assessment.  MARENCO also undertakes species-specific surveys including badgers, bats and otters.  These are conducted in accordance with Northern Ireland Environment Agency guidelines.

The typical output includes an assessment of potential impacts accompanied by appropriate mitigation methods.

MARENCO has extensive experience in project managing and conducting environmental surveys, including water analysis, air emissions analysis, soil analysis, and nuisance assessment.  Typically these surveys are undertaken in conjunction with accredited laboratories in UK and Ireland.
